Mulch & Topsoil Coverage:

How Much Mulch?

Mulch is usually sold by the cubic yard. Here’s the easiest way to figure how much you need:

  1. First, find out the size of the area you want to cover in square feet. This is easy; just multiply the length of your garden by the width.
  2. Next, decide how deep you want your mulch to be, in inches.
  3. Now multiply the size of your garden in square feet (#1) by the depth of your mulch in inches (#2).
  4. Divide the number you get in #3 by 324. This is the number of cubic yards of mulch you will need to cover your garden.

1 cubic yard or mulch or topsoil will cover:

  • 162 square feet at a depth of 2 inches
  • 108 square feet at a depth of 3 inches
  • 81 square feet at a depth of 4 inches
  • 65 square feet at a depth of 5 inches
  • 54 square feet at a depth of 6 inches
  • 46 square feet at a depth of 7 inches
  • 40 square feet at a depth of 8 inches

Firewood

What's a cord?

A cord of firewood is 128 cubic feet of closely stacked wood, including the air space between fire logs. The terms "face cord," "rack," "truck load," and "pile" have no agreed meaning or legal meaning. In fact, consumer laws ban the use of these terms in commerce! So, a stack of firewood 4 feet wide, 4 feet tall, and 8 feet long is a cord, as is a stack 2 feet wide, 4 feet high, and 16 feet long.
